Capturing the Lightning

At last it can be told! We'll shortly be taking delivery of possibly the most spectacular icon of the fifties - nothing less than an English Electric Lightning. It's all thanks to our great friends at Gateguards for spotting it as a possible restoration project, and especially to BAE Systems for graciously donating this wonderful piece of brute-force technology to us.

She's dismantled at the moment, but Gateguards have done the disassembly with great care and so we hope to have her back in one piece very shortly. Unfortunately she'll never fly again, but she's in unexpectedly sound condition, so she should look stunning when she moves into her new home.

I can see that this is a Mk3 or a Mk6, do you know the airframe number? I may have flown it.

She was originally built for the Royal Saudi Air Force, Tony, registered as 53-672. She was bought by BAE in 1986 and re-registered as ZF580.
